Marta Baker, Head of Events, is leaving the College on 22 July 2016 after 33 years. There will be a farewell party for Marta on Wednesday 20 July in the Picture Gallery (3.30-5pm). Marta Baker joined Bedford College, as Assistant to the Principal in 1983 after 5 years at Senate House and the Careers Service where she was in charge of the milkrounds and graduate summer fairs.
She managed the Principal’s Office for 10 years, first for Professor Dorothy Wedderburn and later for Professor Norman Gowar. She moved to the newly created External Affairs Office in 1992 as Events and PR Manager later adding the alumni relations role to her portfolio. She project- managed the Sesquicentenary Celebrations in 1999 for the founding of Bedford College followed in 2000 by the Bicentennial Celebrations of Thomas Holloway’s birth.
Another highlight was the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the merger in 2005 and a series of concerts by the College’s three famous alumnae sopranos.
Events have always been Marta’s passion: the annual programme of College Lectures, the Honorary Fellows Ceremony and Honorary Degrees Awards Ceremony at Graduation Ceremonies; the St Cecilia’s and the Feasts. She masterminded the annual Garden Party for 22 years and managed a high number of Royal Visits by HRH The Princess Royal as well as the 2014 Visit by HM The Queen.
Marta has worked closely with 6 Principals, 5 Chairmen of Council, 14 Vice-Principals and other members of the Senior Management Team, Deans and Heads of Departments as well as Surrey County and Runnymede Borough Councils.
